In "Making the Case for Peer Support", a Mental Health Peer Support Project Committee makes the case that "People with lived experience of mental health problems or illnesses can offer huge benefits to each other.  [...] the development of personal resourcefulness and self-belief, which is the foundation of peer support, can not only improve people’s lives but can also reduce the use of formal mental health, medical and social services."

This document also highlights that "According to activists in the consumer/survivor movement, “a self-help group can take many different forms; its parameters are limited only by the desires, energy and possibilities of its members.”" (ZINMAN IN CAMPBELL & LEAVER, 2003, P. 13)
